## A/B Test Design: [Experiment Name]

### Experiment Summary
| Field | Detail |
|-------|--------|
| **Hypothesis** | If we [change], then [metric] will [improve] because [reason] |
| **Primary Metric** | [The ONE metric this test aims to move] |
| **Secondary Metrics** | [2-3 additional metrics to monitor] |
| **Guardrail Metrics** | [Metrics that must NOT degrade] |
| **Test Type** | A/B / A/B/C / A/B/n |
| **Assignment Unit** | User / Session / Device |
| **Target Population** | [Who is eligible for this test] |

---

### Sample Size Calculation

Parameters: Baseline conversion rate (p₁) = [X]% Minimum Detectable Effect (MDE) = [X]% relative ([X]pp absolute) Significance level (α) = 5% (two-tailed) Statistical power (1-β) = 80% Number of variants = [N]

Required sample per variant: n = (Z_α/2 + Z_β)² × (p₁(1-p₁) + p₂(1-p₂)) / (p₂ - p₁)² n = [calculation shown] n = [N] per variant

Total sample needed: [N] × [variants] = [N] total Estimated daily traffic: [N] eligible users/day Estimated test duration: [N] days ([N] weeks)

| Parameter | Value | Rationale |
|-----------|-------|-----------|
| Baseline Rate | [X]% | [Historical data source] |
| MDE | [X]% relative | [Business justification — why this lift matters] |
| Alpha (α) | 5% | [Standard / adjusted for multiple comparisons] |
| Power (1-β) | 80% | [Standard] |
| **Sample per Variant** | **[N]** | |
| **Test Duration** | **[N] days** | |

### Test Design

| Variant | Description | % Traffic |
|---------|-----------|-----------|
| Control (A) | [Current experience — describe exactly] | 50% |
| Treatment (B) | [Changed experience — describe exactly what's different] | 50% |

### Guardrails & Stopping Rules
| Rule | Condition | Action |
|------|----------|--------|
| Safety stop | Guardrail metric degrades >[X]% | Stop test, revert to control |
| No peeking | Do not check results before [date] | Prevents false positives |
| Maximum duration | [N] weeks | Stop and analyze regardless of significance |
| SRM check | Sample Ratio Mismatch >1% | Investigate assignment bug |

### Analysis Plan (Pre-Registration)
1. Primary analysis: [Frequentist / Bayesian] test on [primary metric]
2. Segment analysis: [Segments to cut by — pre-specified, not post-hoc]
3. Multiple comparison correction: [Bonferroni / FDR if multiple metrics]
4. Decision criteria: Ship if p < 0.05 AND practical significance met

## A/B Test Results: [Experiment Name]

### Decision
| | |
|---|---|
| **Result** | **[SHIP / ITERATE / KILL]** |
| **Confidence** | [High / Medium / Low] |
| **Statistical Significance** | [Yes (p=[X.XXX]) / No (p=[X.XXX])] |
| **Practical Significance** | [Yes — lift of [X]% exceeds MDE / No — lift too small to matter] |

---

### 1. Summary Results

| Metric | Control | Treatment | Δ Absolute | Δ Relative | p-value | Significant? |
|--------|---------|-----------|-----------|-----------|---------|-------------|
| **[Primary]** | [X.XX]% | [X.XX]% | +[X.XX]pp | +[X.X]% | [0.XXX] | **[Yes/No]** |
| [Secondary 1] | [X.XX]% | [X.XX]% | [+/-X.XX]pp | [+/-X.X]% | [0.XXX] | [Yes/No] |
| [Secondary 2] | [value] | [value] | [diff] | [diff%] | [0.XXX] | [Yes/No] |
| [Guardrail 1] | [value] | [value] | [diff] | [diff%] | [0.XXX] | No degradation ✓/✗ |

### 2. Statistical Detail

Test: [Two-proportion z-test / t-test / Mann-Whitney]

Control: n = [N], conversions = [N], rate = [X.XX]% Treatment: n = [N], conversions = [N], rate = [X.XX]%

Observed lift: [X.XX]pp ([X.X]% relative) 95% Confidence Interval: [[X.XX]pp, [X.XX]pp] p-value: [X.XXXX] Power achieved: [X]%

Effect size (Cohen's h): [X.XX] — [Small (<0.2) / Medium (0.2-0.8) / Large (>0.8)]

### 3. Validity Checks

| Check | Result | Status |
|-------|--------|--------|
| Sample Ratio Mismatch (SRM) | Control: [X]% / Treatment: [X]% (expected 50/50) | ✓ Pass / ✗ Fail |
| Minimum sample reached | [N] vs required [N] | ✓ Pass / ✗ Fail |
| No early peeking | First check at pre-planned date | ✓ Pass / ✗ Fail |
| Novelty/Primacy effects | [Checked via time-series analysis] | ✓ Stable / ✗ Decaying |
| AA test (pre-period) | No pre-existing differences | ✓ Pass / ✗ Fail |

### 4. Segment Analysis

| Segment | Control Rate | Treatment Rate | Lift | p-value | Significant? |
|---------|-------------|---------------|------|---------|-------------|
| [Mobile] | [X]% | [X]% | [X]% | [X.XXX] | [Yes/No] |
| [Desktop] | [X]% | [X]% | [X]% | [X.XXX] | [Yes/No] |
| [New Users] | [X]% | [X]% | [X]% | [X.XXX] | [Yes/No] |
| [Returning] | [X]% | [X]% | [X]% | [X.XXX] | [Yes/No] |

**Note**: Segment results are exploratory — lower bar for significance but higher bar for action.

### 5. Business Impact Projection

| Metric | Monthly Impact | Annual Impact | Confidence |
|--------|---------------|--------------|------------|
| Additional [conversions/revenue] | +[N] / +$[X] | +[N] / +$[X] | Based on [X.X]% lift |
| 95% CI range (annual) | $[X] — $[X] | | Conservative — optimistic |

### 6. Decision Rationale

**Ship because**:
- [Statistical significance achieved: p=[X.XXX] < α=0.05]
- [Practical significance: [X]% lift exceeds [X]% MDE]
- [No guardrail metric degradation]
- [Consistent across key segments]
- [Projected annual impact: $[X]]

**OR Kill because**:
- [Not statistically significant after [N] days / [N] users]
- [Effect size smaller than MDE — not worth the complexity]
- [Guardrail metric [X] degraded by [X]%]

**OR Iterate because**:
- [Directionally positive but not significant — needs larger sample or bigger change]
- [Significant for [segment] but not overall — consider targeted rollout]

### 7. Next Steps
| # | Action | Owner | Timeline |
|---|--------|-------|----------|
| 1 | [Ship to 100% / Run follow-up / Revert] | [Team] | [Date] |
| 2 | [Next experiment based on learnings] | [Team] | [Date] |

Rules

  • Pre-registration is mandatory for test design — define primary metric and analysis plan BEFORE looking at results
  • Sample size calculation must show the formula and all input parameters
  • Always check for SRM (Sample Ratio Mismatch) before interpreting results
  • Distinguish statistical significance (p-value) from practical significance (is the lift worth it?)
  • Segment analysis is exploratory — flag as such to prevent p-hacking
  • Include 95% confidence interval for the lift, not just the point estimate
  • Check for novelty effects (early spike that fades) via time-series of the metric
  • Guardrail metrics are mandatory — every test can have side effects
  • Business impact must be projected with confidence intervals
  • Decision must be one of three: SHIP, ITERATE, or KILL — with clear rationale
