Enter any two of ad spend, impressions and CPM and it solves the third. Then it keeps going past the impression, to what each click, lead, booked call and client costs.

How to calculate CPM and cost per lead
CPM is what the platform charges to show your ad a thousand times. It is the price of attention. Every number after it, from the click to the client, tells you what that attention turned into.
CPM
Ad spend ÷ Impressions × 1,000
Impressions
Ad spend ÷ CPM × 1,000
Ad spend
CPM × Impressions ÷ 1,000
Cost per click (CPC)
Ad spend ÷ Clicks
Click-through rate (CTR)
Clicks ÷ Impressions
Cost per lead (CPL)
Ad spend ÷ Leads
Cost per booked call
Ad spend ÷ Booked calls
Use the same ad spend and the same date range for every line. Take spend, impressions and clicks from Ads Manager, and leads, booked calls and clients from your CRM.
A worked example
Hypothetical example. Made-up numbers, not client data.
- 1$3,000 of Meta ads buys 200,000 impressions: 3,000 ÷ 200,000 × 1,000 = $15 CPM.
- 22,400 people click: 2,400 ÷ 200,000 = 1.2% CTR, and 3,000 ÷ 2,400 = $1.25 per click.
- 3120 of them opt in: 3,000 ÷ 120 = $25 per lead.
- 420 book a call and 4 become clients: $150 per booked call and $750 per client.
The CPM tells you what the attention cost. The $750 per client tells you whether the campaign can scale, and that depends on everything after the click.
What a good CPM looks like
There is no single good CPM. It moves with the audience, the placement, the country, the time of year and how the auction rates your creative. Compare your CPM with your own past campaigns, not with a number from someone else’s account. Our guide to what Instagram ads cost covers what moves the price.
A cheap CPM is not a win on its own. Cheap impressions in front of the wrong people produce cheap leads that never book. Manage cost per booked call and cost per client, and set their ceiling with the break-even ROAS calculator.
If CPM and CTR hold steady while cost per lead climbs, the problem sits after the click: the page, the offer or the form. The conversion rate calculator shows which step is losing people.
To set those costs against the revenue they brought in, use the ROAS calculator. If you want the campaigns and the funnel after the click built as one system, that is our Meta ads service.
